Meet The Press: Football Opens Fall Camp

Senior NT Nicolas Jean-Baptiste

On practicing in the heat...
"I'm ready for the heat. We've been playing this game in Texas for so long so you get used to it. You know it's a little bit hotter than it usually is but you get used to it after awhile. Give it about a week and we'll all be fine."

On the convenience of the Allison Indoor Facility...
"It's very, very, very nice (and) very convenient to have the indoor (practice facility). You know just in case it gets a little too hot for some people, then we can go inside. But you can't take a day off, even if we're in the indoor; you've got to play hard."

On playing for Coach Phil Bennett...
"We're right where we want to be right now; we're just going to build on what we learned in the spring. We're going to get a lot more cohesive defensively. Communication is going to be key this fall and you know just getting plays in and everyone being on the same page and doing our responsibilities. That's going to be the key in the fall."

Senior C Philip Blake

On the offensive line...
I think (it's our best offensive line we've had) even though we lost Danny Watkins. (Danny) was a great leader, great guy. But Cyril Richardson is taking the place of him and he played last year with us so we know what he can offer. We're all comfortable with it."

On the team's depth...
"A lot of players can come in (and play). If someone goes down, we're confident that someone can come on and take our spot."

On what he sees in this offensive line...
"We have better depth. Cyril (Richardson) played with us last year in the season so we're all comfortable with him and we have a lot of guys who are backing up so if someone goes down then someone can jump up and take his spot."

Junior QB Robert Griffin III

On the start of fall camp...
"It's always exciting to get back into fall camp, get ready for the season. We've been training this whole summer for a long time and it can get kind of boring and tiring. It's their job to beat us up in the summer and it's our job to go out and perform in the fall. So that's what we're looking forward to."

On the heat...
"Texas heat is Texas heat. I don't think it's ever been this high before, but it's still something we have to deal with. If we have a game that's 110, then it will be to our advantage because we're practicing in it."

On the Allison Indoor Facility...
"If they turn the A/C on, then it's great. But if they do what Coach (Briles) does and leave the A/C off to make us sweat and to be really humid in there, then it's not so great. But I think Coach Briles will turn the A/C on and we'll be okay and get some good work in."

On using the end of 2010 season as motivation for this season...
"Yeah you know it helped us realize that you can't just start fast; you've got to finish strong. We've always said that, but you know it happened to us where we had that (four-game) skid and we're looking forward to not letting that happen again. Start fast, finish strong. I mean we still made it to a bowl game and it extended our season and it helped this team get a lot better and grow so those are the positives you have to take from it."

On how he's handling the Heisman talk...
"You've just got to realize that the Heisman's a team award and I've always said that. Your team is going to win you the Heisman and, if I could, I would take my whole offensive line or the whole offense with me up there, if I could take them to New York, if we make it that far. So you know they realize that if I win any type of award, and it might not even be me, it might be someone else from this team, so I'm willing to do whatever it takes to allow this team to be successful. And, if it includes a Heisman then I would accept it for us."

On whether team is good enough to win a major award...
"I think we are. You know, I've said this offense can be one of the best in the nation and the defense, although others may not believe in them, we believe in them. Because they are part of this Baylor Bear family and Coach (Phil) Bennett is going to do a good job with making sure those guys are in the right spot."

Head Coach Art Briles: Pre-Practice

Opening Statement...
"It's fun to finally get on the field. You know we do a lot of talking and planning and hoping and dreaming and now it's time to put everything into reality. Our guys are very focused, very disciplined and very eager to get out there and prove something this year. It's a fun time, it's a great time. We feel very privileged to be part of it."

On how it feels to start a new season...
"I get jitters all the time. You know, it's funny, it's crazy because you know I was actually thinking before the team meeting, or before the first day of anything, it's still like it's the first day ever. And that's really how I try to approach every day of work, like it's my first day on the job, because any day that it's your first day on the job, you're very eager to perform, to please, to work, to you know, have a great attitude and that's the way we ought to approach every day and that's what we try to do."

On the team's retention level...
"I think we've already seen it in our meetings, there's a great retention level. We've just got to get out and perform. We've got to make a few adjustments here and there, both sides of the ball, special teams, you know. We've got to get out there and perform and get ready. We'll be playing in about three and a half, four weeks."

On how continuity helps the team...
"It's great. Because we do know what we're doing, you know we're not starting at (the bottom) and really even defensively, in the spring they kind of had to start over and now their retention level's good, and they're ready to get on the defensive side of the ball. So as a unit, you know as a team, we're juiced up and ready."

On the defense playing with a "chip on its shoulder"...
"You know we all want to play that way, we all want to perform that way, because you're never good enough and you're never doing enough. So hopefully both sides of the ball and special teams and the whole team in general will feel that way. I feel like we want the defense to be great, we want the offense to be great and we want special teams to be great because, if you do that, then you have a great football team. We understand the importance of all facets of the game."

On balancing practice in the heat...
"Well it doesn't need to be a survival, because then you quit working. What we've got to do is be productive while we're on the field. So we'll monitor the pace of the players and how they're handling everything and then, if it gets too bad, then we'll go indoors."

Head Coach Art Briles: Post-Practice

On the first practice of fall in the books...
"(The guys) were about like they should be. We don't want to come out and see who hollers the most. We want to come out here and get some work done. That's what we talked about, come out with a workman-like attitude, come out here and help this team win. There's a whole lot of retention from the spring. It's like we never left the field. That's a tribute to Kaz (Kazadi) and his staff and what they did this summer. Our guys are in great shape."

On dealing with the heat...
"We don't talk about it. We try to have our workouts set up where we don't run into danger by splitting (practice between) outside and inside. Precaution is the best measure and we are being pretty cautious about (the heat)."

On narrowing down the starting defense...
"We'll probably plug in 15-16 guys like we do offensively. The siituation determines who's on the field a lot of time. And then the rotations move when someone needs a break. I think we have a pretty good idea who will jog out there first, but there's still a few jobs open no doubt. That's what fall camp's for."

On plans for the offense...
"We need to keep figuring out ways to move the ball. That's what we're doing. We have to keep expanding schematically with our formations, our motions and our reads. What we don't want to do is "look the same, be the same." We'll continue to open the book enough and find ways to move the ball."
