NEW ORLEANS - Baylor senior quarterback Bryce Petty is among 32 signal callers on the Manning Award preseason watch list, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Thursday. The Manning Award recognizes the country's top quarterback and is the only QB award that takes into account the nominee's bowl performance.
The honor adds to Petty's long list of preseason accolades that includes Big 12 Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, preseason All-Big 12 quarterback, AFCA Good Works Team nominee, and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year watch lists member.
Petty was named one of 10 finalists for the award a season ago. Petty is now one of four Big 12 quarterbacks on the list.
On the field in 2013, the Midlothian, Texas, native was the national leader in yards-per-completion (16.80) and second nationally in passing efficiency (174.29) and points responsible for per-game (21.2). Petty led the Big 12 in passing yards (4,200, fourth nationally), total offense (339.2 yards/game, eighth nationally), passing touchdowns (32, 11th nationally), and rushing touchdowns (14, 19th nationally). He completed 250-of-403 passes (62.0 percent) and ran for 209 yards and 14 TDs on 94 rushes.
While leading Baylor to its first Big 12 title in program history, Petty was named All-America by Athlon and Sporting News and was a consensus Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.
Additional quarterbacks may be added to the Watch List after the start of the season. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
