WACO, Texas -- Baylor sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III tossed four touchdowns, and freshman wide receiver Willie Jefferson had two scoring receptions in the Bears' first scrimmage of the 2009 preseason camp at the Highers Practice Fields. The scrimmage lasted 90 minutes.

Griffin, a 2008 Freshman All-American, was 14-of-19 for 264 yards. Quarterbacks were limited from contact; therefore, Griffin's rushing opportunities were virtually non-existent.

"I think he's right where he needs to be as far as composure, execution and confidence," head coach Art Briles said. "That's what you want out of that position. He's got the experience now."

Blake Szymanski was 15-of-20 for 133 yards. Nick Florence finished 9-of-10 for 54 yards and a touchdown.

The scoring started with Griffin connecting on a 45-yard touchdown pass to David Gettis. Dary Stone followed with a 43-yard field goal before Florence hit Jefferson on a 5-yard fade route in the corner of the end zone. Griffin added touchdown passes of 10 yards to Kendall Wright, 37 yards to Krys Buerck and 17 yards to Jefferson. Ben Parks also had a 22-yard field goal.

Jay Finley had four carries for 51 yards, while freshman Glasco Martin logged 31 yards on six carries. Buerck tallied 100 yards on seven receptions. Jefferson had five catches for 63 yards, Gettis caught three passes for 96 yards, and Wright had 40 yards on five receptions.

Three regulars did not see action Saturday: tight ends Justin Akers and Brad Taylor, and linebacker Joe Pawelek.

"Those guys are a little banged up," Briles said. "There's no scoreboard out here today."

Baylor returns to the practice field Monday at 9:40 a.m. CDT. The Bears open the 2009 season Saturday, Sept. 5, at Wake Forest. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ABC/ESPN2.
