Meet the Press: Football Weekly Presser vs. SMU

  Head Coach Art Briles

Opening Statement...
"The difference between college, high school football, and professional football is that with high school you get scrimmages, with NFL you get preseason games, {but] with college they blow the whistle and it's real."

On Garret Gilbert's first year at SMU...
"He's [Garret Gilbert] got experience, he is a guy that won a bunch in high school and did well at Texas, quite honestly, there for a while. He is a guy that fits their system. He is a really good fit for them and probably vice versa."

On old Southwest Conference rivalries...
"The less old rivalries we continue to let burn, the better it is. The old days of the Southwest Conference were great, I played in it, I believe in it, it's gone."

On SMU's run game...
"That's a misconception about June [Jones]. If you watch them on tape, they are going to run the football. He wass running it years ago, and he is doing it today." "They are very good on the defensive side of the football. They finished 26th in the country last year, and we certainly feel like we are good on that side of the ball."

On disrupting Garret Gilbert...
"What you have to do is disrupt the rhythm, whether you do that with dropping eight in the coverage, or you're bringing pressure and getting him to move his feet before he is ready."

On Nick Florence as the starter...
"With Nick [Florence] we know we are going to get tremendous passion, tremendous effort and a great amount of intelligence."

On Nick Florence as a leader...
"Nick [Florence] is a success already. He is going to make it because he has already made it. He has already graduated, is already married, salutatorian out of his high school class. He is a great human being. Nick wass the same way yesterday as he is going to be tomorrow, and he is not going to change."

On starting two new Linebackers...
"Bryce [Hager] and Eddie [Lackey] are both good football players. We expect really big things out of them."

  Nickel Back Ahmad Dixon

On getting ready for the season...
"I'm tired of knocking my own guys around and making plays on my own guys. I'm ready to play someone else. Coach doesn't let us hit each other, and we really don't get to go full speed. We are just anxious to unload on some people. We have to hold it until game day. We're ready to show everybody who we can be."

On Coach [Phil] Bennett...
"Coach Bennett can trust us now compared to last year. He was trying to see the good and the bad in all of us, and now he's figured it out. He can let us play now, and that's the beauty of it."

On the SMU game...
"No matter how big the rivalry is, I get fired up, I get anxious just to go out there and keep the tradition going, and try to put our team on the upper end of the winning scale."

  Linebacker Eddie Lackey

On his first year at Baylor...
"I can't wait to put on those cleats and strap up those pads. It's definitely an awesome thing to be here at Baylor University. Just seeing the campus right now, its very vibrant and the people you can tell are fired up in their football shirts. I can't wait to get out there and show what we've been working for."

On his story...
"I came out of high school and I wasn't as big as the normal 6'3" 250-pound linebacker, so I took my football experience to a Division II school in Midland, Michigan. It wasn't for me, and I just didn't like it. I knew I had more potential and that thought alone really brought me back home. I ended up here."

  Defensive End Gary Mason Jr.

On his senior year...
"Its my last go round with Baylor and the Green and Gold. I'm going to make use of it."

On his health...
"I'm getting back into the swing of things. My leg is getting back under me. I'm trying to work, getting my lateral movement back fast. I'll be ready by the time the game starts."

On defending Garrett Gilbert...
"I remember playing him two years ago. It was real fun. We already know what to expect. We keep watching film and getting what we can out of it."

  Quarterback Nick Florence

On being the Baylor Quarterback...
"We're just playing college football. I get an opportunity to play and it happens to be behind Rob (Robert Griffin III). I know he's done a lot for us, and I want to continue that on and see what we can do."

On the Texas Tech game last year...
"Being who I am, my faith is in the Lord, and he writes our plan. We can do our own thing, but he's going to make his own story. So at that point, I want to do what I can for my team and everything is going to work out. I get one season right now, and I am going to enjoy it."

On his senior year...
"This is my one chance, and I have the opportunity which is all you can ask for. I'm going to make the most of it. It's going to be a fun and memorable year. We are going to achieve our goals."
