Aaron Jones made Baylor's first game-winning field goal since 2006.
Sept. 6, 2011
IRVING, Texas –Robert Griffin III and Aaron Jones each earned Big 12 Conference Player of the Week honors, as selected by a media panel on Tuesday. Griffin III was named Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career, while Jones earned his first Special Teams Player of the Week award.
RG3 is the first Baylor player ever to win three Big 12 Player of the Week awards in his career. He joins Jones to become the first pair of Baylor players to earn the offensive and special teams awards in the same week. It’s the fourth time Baylor has had multiple award winners in the same week, with the previous three all coming on defense and special teams.
RG3 threw a career-high five touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 50-48 win over No. 14 TCU in a nationally televised game on Friday at Floyd Casey Stadium. Griffin III completed 21 of 27 passes for 359 yards, rushed 10 times for 38 yards and also caught a 15-yard pass on third-and-10 to extend the game-winning drive.
Griffin III’s touchdown passes went for 35, 28, 14, 64 and 42 yards, respectively. He also completed passes for 21 and 36 yards, giving him six completions of 20 or more yards in the game. RG3 accounted for 50 of the Bears’ 60 yards on the drive that ended with Jones’ 37-yard game-winning field goal with 1:04 remaining.
Jones’ game-winning kick was the first by a Baylor player since Ryan Havens’ 22-yard field goal in the third overtime of a win at Colorado in 2006. Jones tacked on five extra-point kicks, giving him eight points in the game.
Stork also took over kickoff duties in the second half and averaged 67 yards on four kicks. He held TCU to an average starting field position of its 18-yard line and forced the Horned Frogs to start their final drive from the own 14 after his field goal put Baylor back in front 50-48.
The win was Baylor’s first over a top-15 opponent since knocking off 12th-ranked Colorado on Sept. 14, 1991. Baylor’s 50 points scored were its most ever against a ranked opponent and the most allowed by the TCU defense since 2005.
Tony Jerod-Eddie of Texas A&M was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Oklahoma State’s Quinn Sharp shared the special teams award with Jones.
RG3 is on watch lists for the Maxwell, Manning, Davey O’Brien and Walter Camp awards and he’s an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee. For more on Griffin III, visit www.BU-RG3.com or www.Facebook.com/RG3forHeisman.
