DALLAS, Texas -
Baylor RB Jonathan Golden was named SBC Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week for games of Sept. 7 in voting by a select panel of media covering the Big 12, the conference announced Monday.
The BU running back had a career night with 19 carries, 108 yards, five TD, one pass reception for 28 yards and a score. Golden tied the Big 12 record with six touchdowns in a 50-12 win over Samford. He set a school standard with the six total TD and five rushing tallies in a single game.
Golden's scoring runs covered four, one, three, 16, and 17 yards while he also snared a 28-yard screen pass for TD No. 6 from sophomore quarterback Aaron Karas. All six of his touchdowns came within a 2 ½ quarters' span as he did not play after the 8:26 mark in the third quarter. Golden entered the 2002 season with 110 career carries for 305 yards and two TD in three seasons with the Bears.
Nebraska CB DeJuan Groce and Kansas State CB-KR-WR Terence Newman were named SBC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
Groce picked off two passes for the second consecutive week as the Husker defense held Utah State to just 13 points in a 44-13 win. Over the last two games he has equaled his previous career total of four interceptions after making two vs. Troy State and running back two punts for TD. Groce made three pilfers a year ago and logged one interception in his sophomore campaign. He also broke up one pass against the USU Aggies to give him two for the season and 35 for his career--fourth in Nebraska history. Groce also make one tackle as Utah State avoided Groce's vicinity of the secondary and returned his second interception 21 yards. The senior was a key punt coverage unit member and helped Kyle Larson post a 53-yard net punting average-57.1 yards gross per punt.
Newman had his second interception of the season and also broke up another pass to lead a Wildcat defense that posted its first shutout of the year in a 68-0 win over UL Monroe. In the special teams' area he ran a punt back 40 yards for a touchdown and had three punt returns for 42 net yards. Newman also set up a two-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter with his pilfer and later caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from QB Marc Dunn. The multi-position standout finished with three solo tackles and two assists for a total of five while playing just over a half. One of his tackles was for a loss of three yards.
