Art Briles Day-After Quotes

Sept. 12, 2010

After starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2005 with a 34-6 win over Buffalo, Baylor will now travel to Fort Worth as the Bears take on the TCU Horned Frogs Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by Versus.

Here are Art Briles' Sunday thoughts on the Bears' victory over Buffalo and next week’s game at TCU.

On last night’s game…
“Like we kind of looked for the first week, the same thing again last night – great effort, great intensity and great toughness, so from that standpoint I think we are getting on the right track. The good thing about it is we can still improve in a bunch of areas, so that is the encouraging part.”

On if Robert Griffin III was more in tune with his receivers…
“I think he was really sharp, kept his composure really well early and just played with a lot of confidence. It leads off to the other people.”

On if the play of the defense was expected…
“We would like to think expected, because that is what you want to do. Those guys are playing hard with a lot of confidence, so it is very encouraging right now.”

On if the defense’s success is because of the defensive line…
“I think so. I mean it always does, both sides of the ball. If you are physical up front and can be dominating then you have a chance to be successful both sides of the football. Our defensive line just really kind of sustains. They are pretty constant with pressure, pushing the line of scrimmage, then their effort…. The best pass defense is pass rush. We may have not had all the sacks that we wanted, but we got a lot of pressures.”

On if the team took its foot of the gas last night…
“Yes and no. Yes, in that, we schematically backed off some. No, in that, we still need to understand, you have got to fully finish each play and each series, which we didn’t do in some situations. I do believe there was some scheme in that.”

On the play of special teams…
“It is just good for our team. We understand that you have to be really, really good in that phase of the game, so those guys have taken a lot of pride in what they are doing. We still have some areas we could certainly improve on, which is what we will work on this week. The first couple of weeks they have done well. (Derek) Epperson was sharp last night. We don’t need to punt the ball that many times, but he really had a good punt early in the game that flipped the field position.”

On the play of Aaron Jones…
“He is just consistent. That is the thing about it. That is the thing we noticed in the spring. Every time he kicked it at least it made you look, because it had a chance to go in. There wasn’t any bad ones. He is just consistent. It will certainly help us now and on down the road, because any time you can cross midfield and make an extra 15 to 20 yards from there you have a chance to put points on the board. That is big…. He is just doing his job. That is the way he looks at it. He has got a job to do and he is doing it just like the snapper, holder and all of those people blocking.”

On the excitement level of the team as they face TCU…
“For us it is just another step. We have got to keep improving as a football team. That is what our goal has been from day one to go out and be better in week three than we were in week two, week two than week one. That will be our goal this Saturday. We will be a better football team than we were last week.”

Note: Baylor has sold out of its allotment of tickets for both the TCU and Rice games. Fans still in need of tickets should contact the TCU and Rice ticket offices.
