Art Briles Day-After Quotes

Oct. 11, 2009

After dropping its first conference contest of the season to Oklahoma 33-7, Baylor now turns its attention to Iowa State. The Bears will travel to Ames, Iowa for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Here are Art Briles' Sunday thoughts on the Bears' loss to Oklahoma as well as Saturday's upcoming game against Iowa State.

On the play of Nick Florence...
"I thought he played like the rest of our team. I thought he played with a lot of passion and emotion. He is a battler, he is a fighter and that is what we need to be known as. From that standpoint, poise-wise, I thought he played well."

On the penalties stifling momentum...
"With the numbers I look at I thought we stopped ourselves early in the football game with penalties with two big possessions going in we would have had a second down and two but had a 15-yard penalty and never converted. From that standpoint we need to clean that stuff up. We can't have penalties that stop drives but at the same time the penalties that occurred yesterday were hustle penalties. When you are playing full tilt and you are laying it on the line some of that is going to happen."

On the team-effort yesterday...
"The encouraging part is that we had a bunch of guys that fought hard for each other. I think we are finally starting to establish an identity and I think we are really starting to come together as a football team. From that standpoint I like the way they rallied up and played hard for each other and Baylor University yesterday."

On the defensive play within the red-zone...
"We are going to fight because that is one thing that you can control. We had a bunch of really good red-zone stops. You would rather them not get down there, but when they do, you want to stop them and make them kick field goals, and that is what we did."

On the game plan going into Norman...
"We had a good plan coming out. Our plan was good. The tempo and the way our guys approached the game was beneficial early. What Oklahoma did was they settled down and composed up a little bit after the half. We still had opportunities to make plays in the second half--it just didn't happen."

On Blake Szymanski's playing time late in the game...
"Blake is a good football player. It looks like he is getting healthy so that is a good thing for Baylor."

On Iowa State...
"They are playing good. They have had two tough Big 12 losses the last two weeks. They are moving the ball offensively. They have a good football team."
