WACO, Texas –Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III was selected as the Midseason Offensive Player of the Year in a midseason report released by Rivals.com on Wednesday.
RG3, a fourth-year junior from Copperas Cove, Texas, has led Baylor to a 4-1 start that has the Bears at No. 20 in the latest AP poll – the highest any Texas team is ranked.
Griffin III has completed 114 of 142 passes for 1,520 yards, 19 touchdowns and just one interception. His 212.94 pass efficiency rating ranks second nationally and is on pace to shatter the NCAA single-season record. RG3 leads the nation with an 80.3 completion percentage and 19 touchdown passes.
On the ground, Griffin III has rushed 60 times for 280 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the season in Saturday’s win over Iowa State, posting 107 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.
Griffin III currently owns or shares 43 Baylor records, including career touchdown-to-interception ratio (60-12), career, single-season and single-game completion percentage, season and career passing touchdowns and season and career passing yards.
RG3 is averaging a Big 12-leading 13.3 yards per pass completion and 10.7 yards per attempt. He’s also accounted for half of the six five-touchdown passing games in the Big 12 this season.
In Baylor’s season-opening upset of then-No. 14 TCU, Griffin III completed 21 of 27 passes for 359 yards and five touchdowns. In the next game, RG3 completed 19 of 21 passes for 265 yards and three TDs in three quarters of a weather-shortened game against SFA. The following week, Griffin III threw for five touchdowns and 338 yards while completing 29 of 33 passes against Rice. Through three games, RG3 threw more touchdown passes (13) than incompletions.
Griffin III tossed five touchdowns again and completed 23 of 31 passes for 346 yards in a one-point loss at Kansas State, and in his latest game he went 22-of-30 for 212 yards and one TD through the air and added 107 rushing yards and a TD against Iowa State.
The Bears return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday when they take on rival Texas A&M in the 108th edition of the “Battle of the Brazos” at Kyle Field in College Station. The game will be televised live nationally on FX.
