WACO, Texas –Baylor junior Robert Griffin III was named first-team quarterback on the Capital One Academic All-District VII football team, as announced by College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday.
It’s the second straight season RG3 has been named first-team academic all-district, making him eligible for the Academic All-America teams. He joins Derek Epperson (2009-10), Joe Pawelek (2007-09) and Daniel Sepulveda (2004-06) as the only Bears to be honored multiple times since 2004.
Baylor has had at least one academic all-district honoree in every season since 2004, with seven different players earning 13 total honors.
Griffin III is enrolled in graduate school after receiving his degree in political science in December 2010, just three years after enrolling at Baylor.
RG3 is also a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Awards, a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works team.
Griffin III was recently named Capital One Cup Impact Performer of the Week after leading Baylor to a 42-39 Homecoming win over Missouri on Saturday. It was the third time this season he’s earned the national award, while no other player has been honored more than once.
RG3 broke his own school record for yards of total offense in a game for the second straight week. He put up 452 yards of offense at Oklahoma State on Oct. 29 and 459 yards of total offense against Missouri. He’s also thrown for more than 400 yards in each of the last three games, giving him four of the eight 400-yard passing performances in program history.
Through eight games, RG3 ranks second nationally in total offense (395.88) and points responsibility (22.75), third in completion percentage (74.0) and passing efficiency (188.06) and tied for fifth in passing touchdowns (26). He owns or shares 44 school records, including single-season and career passing yards and touchdowns.
No. 25 Baylor (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) returns to action with its final true road game of the season when it takes on Kansas (2-7, 0-6 Big 12) at 1 p.m. CST Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kan. The game will not be televised, but live video will be available through All-Access at BaylorBears.com, courtesy of Kansas Athletics. Following the Kansas game, Baylor returns home to host No. 7 Oklahoma at 7 p.m. on Nov. 19.
