Robert Griffin III, a Heisman Trophy candidate, was honored with Big 12 honors for the third time this season and fifth time in his career.
Dec. 5, 2011
IRVING, Texas - Baylor junior quarterback Robert Griffin III was named Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore safety Sam Holl earned the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor, the conference office announced Monday.
This marks the first time in program history the Bears have had the Big 12's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week at the same time. RG3's honor also gives the Bears three straight weeks with the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time. Terrance Ganaway was honored last week and Griffin III earned the award two weeks ago.
RG3, a Heisman Trophy candidate, was honored for the third time this season and fifth time in his career. No Baylor player had ever been honored more than twice in a career prior to this season. Holl's award is the Bears' first defensive honor since Byron Landor earned his second award of the 2010 season on Nov. 1.
Holl and Griffin III led Baylor to a 48-24 win over then-No. 22 Texas on Saturday to give the Bears their first 9-win season since 1986. Holl, a native of Katy, Texas, picked off a pair of passes among six turnovers forced by the Baylor defense, and he posted a game-high 16 tackles. Holl has posted game highs with at least 16 tackles in three of the last four games, including a 21-tackle effort at Kansas.
Holl's first interception of the night and subsequent 62-yard return came with Baylor holding a 31-24 lead midway through the third quarter. He returned the ball all the way to the 11-yard line, and Baylor scored a touchdown two plays later. Holl's 62-yard interception return was the longest in program history that didn't end in a touchdown, and his second interception of the night came in the Baylor end zone and ended Texas' last drive of the game.
RG3 completed 15-of-22 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown passes of 59 and 39 yards were the first two scoring passes of more than 20 yards allowed by the Texas defense this season. Griffin III added two more touchdowns on the ground with 12 carries for 32 yards.
No. 12 Baylor has had four Big 12 Offensive Players of the Week this season. Entering this season the Bears never had more than one offensive honor in a season and accumulated six total offensive honors in the first 15 years of the Big 12 Conference. RG3 has earned five of the 10 offensive honors in program history.
Baylor (9-3, 6-3) closes out the 2011 season by taking on Washington (7-5, 5-4) in the Valero Alamo Bowl at 8 p.m. CST on Dec. 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. For more information, visit www.baylorbears.com/bowlcentral.
