Morton Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

K.J. Morton

Dec. 9, 2013

IRVING, Texas - Baylor senior cornerback K.J. Morton was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his play in Saturday's 30-10 victory over No. 23 Texas, the league office announced on Monday.

Morton had a pair of interceptions in the contest to go along with three tackles and two pass break ups as the Bears held the Longhorns to a season-low 10 points.

Morton's first pick came in the first quarter as Texas was driving into Baylor territory. Morton
matched Texas WR Mike Davis stride-for-stride and picked off the 3rd-and-15 attempt. He returned it 3 yards to the Baylor 13.

The second interception for Morton sealed the win for Baylor as he jumped a screen pass route and returned the pick 60 yards for the touchdown. However, the score was overturned after a penalty by a BU player during the return. The Bears would go on to score on the very next play to take a 30-10 lead.

The interceptions were the second and third of the season for Morton and the seventh and eighth of his career.

Morton was the first Baylor player to have two interceptions in one game since Eddie Lackey on Nov. 24, 2012, vs. Texas Tech.

Morton and the Baylor pass defense held Texas QB Case McCoy to 12 of 34 passing for 54 yards. With Morton's help, the Baylor defense is second in the Big 12 in total defense (344.0) and third in scoring defense (21.2).

The win over Texas gave Baylor its first-ever Big 12 championship and earned the Bears a spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Bears will now face UCF on Jan. 1 at 7:30 p.m. CT in that game.

BU is 11-1 for the first time in program history. The Bears are ranked No. 6 in the AP Top 25 and the BCS Standings and No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Morton is BU's sixth Big 12 weekly award winner of the season. That mark ties for the most in a single season as BU was awarded six weekly honors in 2011 as well.  The Bears have now won three defensive players of the week honors in back-to-back seasons, after not having more than two in any previous season of Big 12 play. In total, Baylor has had 13 defensive players honored a combined 17 times since 2001.
