Complete List of 2011 AP All-Americans
NEW YORK - Baylor's Kendall Wright and Robert Griffin III were both named All-Americans by The Associated Press on Wednesday. RG3 was honored as the first-team quarterback, while Wright was named a second-team wide receiver, as selected by 16 AP poll voters.
RG3 and Wright are Baylor's first AP All-Americans since former center J.D. Walton was a first-team honoree in 2009. Griffin III is Baylor's first quarterback to make an AP All-America team, while Wright is the Bears' first AP All-America receiver since Gerald McNeil in 1983. Walton's honor in 2009 was the only other time a Baylor offensive player was honored since McNeil in 1983.
Griffin III, Wright and Walton give the Bears three AP All-Americans in the Art Briles era. Baylor's only other AP All-American in the Big 12 era was former punter Daniel Sepulveda, who was honored in 2005 and 2006.
This marks the third time in program history Baylor has had multiple AP All-America selections in the same season and the first since 1991. Frank Ditta, Mike Singletary and Walter Abercrombie were all honored in 1980, and Santana Dotson and Robin Jones were chosen in 1991.
Griffin III, the winner of Baylor's first Heisman Trophy and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, leads the nation with a 192.31 passing efficiency and 22.67 points responsibility per game. A junior from Copperas Cove, Texas, RG3 ranks second nationally with 386.83 yards of total offense per game and fourth with 36 passing touchdowns. In addition to a school-record 3,998 passing yards, RG3 has rushed for 644 yards and nine touchdowns.
Wright, a senior from Pittsburg, Texas, ranks second nationally with 1,572 receiving yards and sixth in with 101 receptions and 13 touchdowns. Baylor's all-time leading receiver in season and career yards, touchdowns and receptions, Wright has totaled at least 100 receiving yards in nine of 12 games this season, including two games of 200 or more yards.
Wright and Griffin III are the most prolific quarterback-wide receiver duo in program history, combining on 26 out of Wright's 29 career receiving touchdowns. Wright holds 10 school records, while RG3 holds a share of 52 school marks.
Griffin III has been named first-team All-America The Associated Press, CBSSports.com, SI.com, Yahoo!/Rivals.com, Phil Steele, FoxSportsNext.com and Football Writers Association of America. He was honored on the Walter Camp Football Foundation's second team.
Wright's list of first-team All-America honors includes CBSSports.com, Phil Steele and Pro Football Weekly. He was named second-team All-America by The Associated Press, SI.com, Yahoo!/Rivals.com and FoxSportsNext.com.
