Bayou City Championship Final Results
HOUSTON - Baylor men's golf finished tied for fifth place in the Bayou City Collegiate Championship. The Bears shot 15-over-par 303 in Sunday's final round at Redstone Golf Club.
Baylor (+11; 286-286-303=875) started the day in second place, but Houston, South Carolina, and Louisiana Tech all turned in better final rounds to jump in front of the Bears. No. Texas (-22; 285-274-283=842) won the tournament by 21 strokes with three of the top four individuals. Chattanooga tied with Baylor at 11-over-par to round out the top five.
"We had tougher course conditions, more wind and a tougher setup, but we didn't play well," head coach Greg Priest said. "It takes a lot of focus on some of those pins and being in the right position in things like that, but we just didn't play well. We are still a young team and those things are going to happen - that is kind of the learning curve for us. We had two pretty good rounds, but we have got to be able to put 54 holes together. The more and more experience we get, the better we will be, and we have to learn from this tournament and the next time we get in this situation we have to be able to put 54 holes together."
Sophomore Filippo Zucchetti (-5; 69-71-71=211) tied for third place to earn his third top-10 finish of the season. Zucchetti's final round of 71 was the Bears' only round under par on the day and was one of only 10 rounds below par out of 85 rounds played on Sunday.
"He put himself in position to win the golf tournament," Priest said. "He made a couple of birdies at 11 and 12 to put himself in position. He played really solid and made a birdie on 15 and was just one off the lead, and then he missed a couple of little short putts on 16 and 17 and came right back and birdied 18. I know he was disappointed that he didn't win, but he had a good finish against some good competition."
Niclas Mansson (+4; 72-71-77=220) tied for 29th, while Kyle Jones (+5; 71-75-75=221) tied for 31st. Baylor's individuals, Matthew Seligmann and Ryan O' Rear, tied for 39th place at 6-over-par 222. Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen finished tied for 46th at 7-over-par, and Andreas Gjesteby tied for 79th place.
The Bears' next tournament is the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. The two-day, 54-hole event begins March 15.
