Baylor senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) fired a final-round 5-under par 67 to claim his second straight individual title with a 54-hole total of 11-under par 205 to lead the 15th-ranked Bears' men's golf team to its second consecutive team victory as well Tuesday at the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational at the 6,879-yard, par-72 Hammock Bay Country Club.
Baca opened the tournament with a 4-under par 68, then followed with a 2-under par 70 in the second round Monday, then closed strong for a two-stroke victory. Baca has shot a total of 25-under par over the last two tournaments, winning the title at last week's UTSA Intercollegiate with a school record 14-under par 199. The victory is the fifth of Baca's career, the most at Baylor since accurate records have been kept since 1988. He also continues to move closer to the all-time leader in top-five and top-10 finishes. Baca now has 24 top-10s and 16 top-fives, trailing Jimmy Walker by two top-10s (26) and three top-fives (19).
The Bears finished with a 9-under par 279 in the third round for a total of 19-under par 845, tying the second-lowest total in school history. Baylor finished four strokes ahead of second-place Florida State for its third victory of the season. Wake Forest finished third at 14-under par 850. Illinois State finished 25 strokes behind at 6-over par 870, while Notre Dame was 27 strokes back at 872.
Junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) posted the fifth top-10 finish of his career, tying for seventh at 4-under par 212. He opened with a 76, followed by back-to-back rounds of 4-under par 68.
Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) tied for 13th at 2-under par 214. Alcorn carded a 70 in the first round, then shot 73. He then closed out with a 1-under par 71. Sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) tied for 20th with a 217, shooting 76 and 68 on day one and a final-round 73. Sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) tied for 23rd at 219 and was consistent the entire tournament, carding 74, 72 and 73.
Baca was tied with Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers heading into the final round, but Reifers closed with a 69 to finish at 207 (66-72-69). Rhode Island's Jesse Larson was third at 209.
Baylor also sent a team to compete at the Harbour Lakes Invitational at the 7,239-yard, par-72 course in Granbury, Texas. The Bears won the event by six strokes with a two-round total of 611.
Sophomore Matt Briggs (San Antonio, Texas) finished third at 150 (75-75), while Junior Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas) was sixth at 152 (79-73). Redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate (Southlake, Texas) finished seventh at 153 (77-76), and redshirt freshman Bill Allcorn (Abilene, Texas) tied for 13th at 157 (78-79). Junior Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) tied for 30th at 164 (86-78).
The Bears return to action at the Louisiana Classics March 6-7 at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La.
