GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The No. 41 Baylor men's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first day of play at the Desert Shootout, hosted by University of Denver. The Bears shot 1-under-par 283 in Thursday's opening round at the Palm Valley Golf Course.

Baylor trails tournament-leader No. 39 Tulsa (-10, 274) by nine strokes. No. 42 BYU (-9, 275) is in one shot back in second place, followed by Denver, Colorado State and Southern Utah, who are all tied in third place after shooting 4-under-par 280 on Thursday. Baylor is only one stroke out of a tie for sixth with No. 19 Illinois and Idaho (-2, 282).

"We played well, we just need to finish," head coach Greg Priest said. "Niclas had eight birdies, two doubles and a triple, and he still shot even. Mikkel was 3-under-par with three to go and ended up shooting 1-over. Tomorrow is pretty much moving day, we just have to go out and play a good round."

Kyle Jones (-4, 67), who is playing in his home state, leads the Bears and is tied for fourth individually at 4-under-par. Niclas Mansson (E, 71) is tied for 31st place, followed by Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (+1, 72), who is tied for 44th. Senior Matthew Seligman and sophomore Filippo Zucchetti (+2, 73) are tied for 57th. Andreas Gjesteby (+5, 76), who is playing as an individual, is tied for 79th place.

"I am sure he is a little fired up," Priest said of Jones. "Anytime you come home you want to play well, and so far he is off to a good start."

Jones' opening round of 67 tied his career low for the second time this season.

"The game plan for tomorrow is we just have to finish," Priest said. "We had it set up today and if we just hold on we can have the lead or be right around the lead, so really our only goal is to go out and do the same thing we did today but finish."

The second round of the tournament is Friday, and teams play the final 18 holes on Saturday. All three days of the tournament are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun starts.
