Baylor (-5, 563) enters Saturday's final round four strokes back of the leader, No. 42 BYU (-9, 559). The Bears also trail second place No. 19 Illinois (-8, 560) by three strokes, and BU is one stroke ahead of No. 39 Tulsa and Wichita State, who are tied for fourth at 4-under-par. Baylor leads the field with 39 birdies through 36 holes.
"Overall, it was a good day," head coach Greg Priest said. "We definitely moved up the leader board and put ourselves within striking distance. That is really what we needed to do to be able to move up the leader board and give ourselves a shot to win going into tomorrow."
Kyle Jones (-5, 137) leads the Bears and is in fifth place individually. He is followed closely by teammate Niclas Mansson (-4, 138), who is one stroke back and in sixth place individually. They trail tournament leader Hunter Sparks of Wichita State by five and six shots, respectively.
"It would be nice for either of them to win individually, but really what we want to do is win as a team," Priest said. "They just need to continue what they have been doing. If we can get some help in our four and five spot, I feel good about our chances."
Sophomore Filippo Zucchetti (-1, 141) is tied for 13th place after shooting 3-under-par 68 in the second round. Matthew Seligman (+6, 148) is currently tied for 65th place, followed by Mikkel Bjerch-Andersen (+8, 150), who is in a tie for 76th place. Baylor's Andreas Gjesteby (+11, 153), who is competing as an individual, is tied for 90th place.
"Tomorrow we need to do the same thing, just continue eliminating our mistakes and getting rid of our high numbers," Priest said.
The final round of the Desert Shootout will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT Saturday at Palm Valley Golf Course.
