NCAA West Regional Day One Results
EUGENE, Ore. -
The Baylor men's golf team shot 14-over par 294 in Thursday's opening round to finish the day in seventh place at the NCAA Eugene Regional. The Bears are currently six strokes out fifth place with 36 holes to go, and the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Stanford leads the tournament after an opening round of 4-under par 276. Oklahoma is in second at even-par, while South Carolina and North Florida are tied for third place at 6-over-par 286. The tournament host, Oregon, rounds out the top-five at 9-over-par 289.
Two Baylor players finished the day among the top 30 individuals. Senior Jerry Ruiz shot 1-over 71 and is tied for 14th place, while junior Filippo Zucchetti is tied for 30th place after his opening round of 3-over-par 73. Andreas Gjesteby and Niclas Mansson finished the day in a tie for 48th place after both shooting 5-over 75, and one stroke behind them is junior Kyle Jones, who is tied for 54th place at 6-over-par 76.
Jones was one of only six players in the 75-player field to make birdie on No. 9, making it the sixth-toughest hole on the course with a scoring average of +0.39 to par.
The Bears were 2-under as a team on hole No. 17, including birdies by Mansson and Zucchetti.
Zucchetti had four birdies in the opening round, the most made by any Baylor player, including two on the front nine and two on the back nine.
Ruiz and Zucchetti finished the day below the course scoring average of 73.84.
Ruiz had one birdie, 15 pars and two bogeys in his round.

9 - the number of birdies made by the Bears in the opening round, including four from Zucchetti, two each from Mansson and Jones and one from Ruiz.
"We didn't play great today, but we're in good shape," head coach Greg Priest said. "We just have to step it up and play well tomorrow."
The Bears are paired with Tennessee-Chattanooga and Liberty in Friday's second round. The group will begin on the 10th hole at 10 a.m. CT.
