PULLMAN, Wash. - Baylor men's golf is in 12th place after shooting 1-over-par 289 in Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

The Bears (+1, 289) are making their 16th consecutive regional appearance at the three-day, 54-hole event. The top five teams and three lowest scoring individuals on non-advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.

No. 1 ranked California (-23, 265) leads the regional, followed by St. Mary's (-21, 267), San Diego State (-18, 270) and Southern California (-16, 272). Baylor enters the second day of the regional 15 strokes back of fifth place Pacific (-14, 274).

"The golf course was there for the taking today, as the scores reflect," head coach Greg Priest said. "We didn't play the way we wanted to, but there are two more rounds to go, and we need them to be good ones. We can't afford any more mistakes."

Baylor was led by Filippo Zucchetti (-2, 70), who is tied for 30th place individually. Zucchetti alternated two birdies and two bogeys over his first eight holes, but a birdie on the ninth allowed him to take the turn at 1-under. He also had three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to finish at 2-under-par.

Kyle Jones is one stroke back of Jones and tied for 36th place after shooting 1-under-par 71. He was 3-under after firing consecutive birdies on the ninth and 10th holes, but he fell to 1-over-par after shooting 4-over in a 5-hole span from the 11th through 15th holes. Jones rebounded with consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th to move back under par.

Ryan O'Rear shot 1-over-73 and is tied for 58th place. He was 2-under after three straight birdies on holes No. 3, 4 and 5, but a double bogey on No. 7 was followed by bogeys on the next two holes to take the turn at 2-over. O'Rear finished the round with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to complete the back nine at 1-under-par.

The third and fourth holes were the toughest to birdie in the first round, as only four players in the 75-player field made birdies on each of those holes, and O'Rear was the only player to birdie both holes. Zucchetti was one of the other three players to birdie the third hole.

Baylor's fourth countable score came from Niclas Mansson, who shot 3-over-par 75 to finish the day tied for 66th place. Mansson rebounded from a double bogey on No. 17 to birdie the 18th hole. He had 10 consecutive pars between the fourth and 13th holes. Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen shot 5-over 77 and is in 71st place.

Baylor begins Friday's second round from the 10th hole at 10 a.m. CT, and Saturday's final round tee times are to be determined. Live scoring for all three rounds is at
