The top five teams and three lowest scoring individuals on non-advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Baylor (-2, 574) will enter Saturday's final round 11 strokes back of Pacific and San Diego State (-13, 563), which are tied for fifth place.
"We played better today and I really liked the way the guys competed," head coach Greg Priest said. "We are going to have to play well tomorrow, and we'll need some help, but it's doable."
All five Baylor players improved on their scores from the first round. The Bears started the round from the 10th hole, and the team took the turn at 5-under-par and moved to 8-under through 12 holes, but they shot 5-over over their final six holes in the round (Nos. 4-9) to finish the day at 3-under-par. Baylor's best hole was the par-5 17th, where all four countable scorers made birdies.
Filippo Zucchetti (-4, 140) again led Baylor with a 2-under-par 70, matching his first-round score. He played his first 17 holes without a bogey and was 4-under, but he made double bogey on No. 9 to drop two strokes to 2-under. Zucchetti jumped 14 spots to a tie for 16th individually heading to the final round.
Kyle Jones (-3, 141) shot 2-under-par 70 on Friday, improving one stroke from his opening round 71. Jones made six birdies and four bogeys in his second round, moving up 11 spots to a tie for 25th place.
Ryan O'Rear (+1, 145) shot even-par 72 in the second round. He took the turn at 2-under, but three bogeys in a five-hole stretch dropped him to 1-over before he finished the round with a birdie on No. 9 to get back to even-par. O'Rear moved up 15 spots to a tie for 43rd entering the final day.
Niclas Mansson (+4, 148) again posted the Bears' fourth countable score, this time with a 1-over-par 73, which was a two-stroke improvement over his opening round. He made a birdie on No. 17 before running off a streak of 10 consecutive pars to end his round, and he advanced nine spots to a tie for 57th place.
Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (+7, 151) shot 2-over-par, which was three strokes better than his opening round, to move up to a tie for 68th place. He took the turn at even-par, and he made double bogey on No. 2 before rebounding with seven straight pars to wrap up the round.
Baylor will begin Saturday's final round from the 10th tee at 10:25 a.m. CT. Bjerch-Andresen will tee off first, followed by Mansson, O'Rear, Jones and Zucchetti in 11-minute intervals, respectively. Live scoring for all three rounds is available at www.golfstat.com.
