TOLEDO, Ohio - Baylor men's golf sophomore Cody Paladino rebounded from a disastrous second round Thursday, moving up to 55th place through 14 holes of the third round at the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. Paladino will finish the final four holes Friday morning - start time was not available at press time.
Paladino, who was tied for 119th place when he began the conclusion of his second round early Thursday morning, shot a 1-under on the back nine to finish the morning session with a 4-over 75. His solid play continued into the third round in the afternoon session as he carded three birdies on the first four holes.
The Kensington, Conn., native birdied the par-5 No. 13 hole all three rounds. A bogey at the par-4 No. 14 left Paladino at 2-under par before paring out the next six holes.
Two days after a double-bogey on the par-3 No. 3, Paladino birdied the hole to move into the top 50 at 3-under for the day. However, he bogeyed holes No. 4 and 5 before darkness set in. Paladino was one of 30 golfers still on the course when play was halted.
North Carolina State's Matt Hill captured medalist honors with a 6-under 207, carding three-straight rounds of 2-under 69. Clemson's Kyle Stanley finished second at 4-under 209, followed by Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler, USC's Tom Glissmeyer and TCU's Tom Hoge round out the top five in a three-way tie for third at 3-under 210.
For the first time, match-play will determine this year's team national champion. The first team to win three of five matches will advance to the semifinals. The semifinals are slated to begin at 1 p.m. CDT Friday with the championship beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT.
Live scoring for the 112th annual NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be available at BaylorBears.com via Golfstat.com.
