INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Baylor is in fourth place after two rounds of play at the Gopher invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. Baylor held the lead through 18 holes after shooting 6-under par 278, but the Bears dropped back three spots in the standings after shooting 11-over-par 295 for a 36-hole total of 5-over par 573.
Baylor got off to a quick start with senior Jerry Ruiz leading the tournament after an opening round score of 6-under par 65, which was three strokes better than his previous career-best round. Ruiz was playing in his first competitive round since April 22, 2012, as he sat out the 2012-13 season as a redshirt. Junior Kyle Jones was in second place and just two strokes back of Ruiz after shooting 4-under-par 67 in the opening round. Both Ruiz and Jones finished the day in the top 10 individually, tied for fifth and eighth, respectively.
Sophomore Andreas Gjesteby is tied for 21st place at 4-over par 146, while Filippo Zucchetti is in a tie for 36th place at 7-over par 149. After a second round of 1-over 72, Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen jumped 12 spots in the standings to a tie for 41st place at 9-over par 151.
• Ruiz shot his lowest career round at 6-under par 65 – his previous best round at Baylor was 68.
• Jones birdied his final hole to give Baylor a 2-stroke lead over New Mexico after one round of play.
• Baylor finished the day eight strokes behind tournament leader New Mexico, but the Bears are just one stroke back of California in third place and five strokes back of Kent State in second.
• Ruiz had seven birdies in the first round.
