TANAGURA, Japan – Baylor men’s golf led all American teams and finished fifth overall after shooting a final-round 8-over-par 288 on Thursday at the 2012 Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan.
“Overall, it was a great experience for the guys, and being able to play with Osaka Gakuin and Tohoku Fukushi was really special. They are really good,” head coach Greg Priest said. “I liked our effort, but we have a long way to go to get to where we want to be this year.”
The Bears (+9; 275-286-288=849) ended up in fifth place behind Tohoku Fukuski (-24; 273-267-276=816), Osaka Gakuin (-11; 273-277-279=829), Nihon (-2; 279-276-283=838) and Senshu (-2; 283-273-282=838), but Baylor’s finish was the best of four American teams in the field. Oregon State finished sixth, San Diego came in eighth and Pacific placed ninth.
Sophomore Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (-4; 66-71-69=206) finished seventh individually after shooting 1-under 69 to finish at 4-under-par 206. The 54-hole total was seven shots better than Bjerch-Andresen’s previous record of 213 set in three tournaments last season.
“It was great to see Mikkel play well this week,” Priest said. “Hopefully he can continue to play this well into the next tournament and throughout the season.”
Sophomore Kyle Jones (+2; 69-71-72=212) shot a final-round 72 to finish tied for 20th at 212, just three strokes back of his 54-hole record. Sophomore Niclas Mansson (+3; 69-71-73=213) tied for 23rd at 3-over 213 after a final round 73, and senior Ryan O’Rear (+8; 71-73-74=218) shot 74 in the final round to finish at 8-over 218.
Baylor returns to tournament action on Sept. 28-29 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico at The Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
