ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Baylor men’s golf is in fourth place after playing 36 holes on day one of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course on Friday. The Bears are at 10-over-par 586 after shooting 8-over 296 in the opening round and 2-over 290 in the second round.
Baylor (+10; 296-290=586) was in sixth place after the opening round, but it shot the third-best second-round score in the 14-team field to move ahead of UC Irvine and Minnesota and into fourth. The Bears trail tournament leader New Mexico (-11; 283-285=568), San Francisco (+1; 297-284=581) and Colorado (+13; 289-294=583).
Niclas Mansson (+2; 70-76=146) had the best day of the seven Bears in action. He enters the final round tied for 14th place, while Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (+3; 76-71=147) and Kyle Jones (+3; 74-73=147) are both tied for 20th place. Filippo Zucchetti (+5; 76-73=149) is tied for 45th place and Ryan O’Rear (+11; 82-73=155) rounded out the team play.
Mansson’s opening-round 70 tied for the 13th-best round of the day and was one shot back of his personal best, set at the Border Olympics in the spring. Mansson’s 36-hole total of 146 was two strokes back of his previous best, while Zucchetti’s second-round 73 tied his personal best.
Andreas Gjesteby (+6; 73-77=150) and Matthew Seligmann (+13; 77-80=157), who are both competing only as individuals, finished the day tied for 39th place and tied for 74th place, respectively. The tournament’s final round gets underway Saturday with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start.
