The 20th-ranked Baylor men's golf team returns to action, competing for the second straight year at the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational hosted by PGA Tour professional Peter Jacobsen Monday and Tuesday at the 6,879-yard, par-72 Hammock Bay Country Club in Naples, Fla. The Bears finished second at the event last year, shooting 17-under par.
The Bears are coming off their second victory of the season, a convincing 13-stroke decision, at the UTSA Intercollegiate. Senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) won the individual title by 11 strokes, his fourth career win, and set the school 54-hole scoring record with a 199 (64-67-68).
Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) finished second at the 2005 Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational, firing a 7-under par 209, including a second-round 69 and a final-round 68.
Baca leads the team with a 71.50 stroke average, while Alcorn ranks second at 72.47. Alcorn, Baca, junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) and sophmore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) have started all five tournaments, while sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) will be making his first start for the Bears this season.
Baylor will also send the team of junior Chase Thomas, redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate, junior Colton Turnquist, redshirt freshman Bill Allcorn and sophomore Matt Briggs to compete at the Harbor Lakes Invitational in Granbury, Texas. Following this week's action, Baylor will return to action at the Louisiana Classics March 6-7 in Lafayette, La.
