WACO, Texas - Following his record performance at the UTSA Intercollegiate Feb. 20-21, Baylor senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) was named the national player of the week Wednesday by Golf World for its upcoming March 3 issue.
Baca captured his fifth career victory by torching Oak Hills Country Club for a school-record 54-hole total of 199. He opened the tournament by firing a career-low 64, then followed with a 67 in the second round. In the final round, Baca carded a 68 to claim an 11-stroke victory over the rest of the field.
Baca also claimed his third straight individual title Tuesday at the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational. He has shot 25-under par over the last two tournaments and is carrying a 67.33 stroke average this spring. Baca has quickly moved up to 11th in the latest Golfweek individual rankings, while ranking third according to Golfstat.
With the three victories this season, Baca now has six for his career, the most at Baylor since accurate records have been kept since 1988. He also continues to move closer to the all-time leader in top-five and top-10 finishes. Baca now has 24 top-10s and 16 top-fives, trailing current PGA Tour professional Jimmy Walker by two top-10s (26) and three top-fives (19).
Baylor captured the team titles at both the UTSA Intercollegiate and Lexus Naples Intercollegiate Invitational as well, giving the Bears a total of three team titles for the season. The Bears have moved up to 15th in the latest Golfweek rankings and rank ninth nationally in greens in regulation.
The Bears return to action March 6-7 at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La.
