LAS VEGAS - Coming off its first win of the season, Baylor men's golf opens its busiest stretch of the spring March 11-13 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The Southern Highlands is the first of three tournaments in a 16-day stretch for Baylor, which is ranked No. 57 in the latest Golfstat standings.
Baylor is one of five Big 12 programs set to compete in the 15-team tournament which includes Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC and host UNLV. All three days will begin with 10 a.m. CST tee times at the 7,510-yard, par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. Live scoring will be available online at www.golfstat.com.
Less than two weeks ago, Baylor cruised to the team tournament title at the Charleston Shootout in Hollywood, S.C., claiming the season's first victory by a 14-stroke margin. Joakim Mikkelsen, who posted his first top-five finish in Baylor's victory, leads the Bears' five-man lineup. Mikkelsen has finished in the top 25 five times this season and leads the Bears in rounds counted (100 percent), scoring average (72.67), score vs. par (1.27) and rounds of par or better (six).
Joining Mikkelsen in the lineup are Lorenzo Scotto, Jerry Ruiz, Cody Paladino and Ryan O'Rear. Both Ruiz and O'Rear posted their career-best finishes at the Charleston Shootout earlier this month. Ruiz carded two sub-par rounds, including a career-low-tying 68, to finish third overall at 5-under. O'Rear finished in the top five for the first time in his career, tying for fifth at even-par.
Scotto has participated in all six of Baylor's previous events this season, ranking second behind Mikkelsen in rounds of par or better (five) and third in scoring average (73.59). Paladino was one of four Bears to post a top-10 finish at the Charleston Shootout, tying for eighth at 1-over and registering his first two sub-par rounds of the season.
Following the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, Baylor will continue its busy month March 20-22 at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play in Ball Ground, Ga.
