WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team is headed to Laredo, Texas, for the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston. The 54-hole event runs Friday and Saturday at the Laredo Country Club.
The Bears look to continue their streak of finishing among the top five teams in all three tournaments played this spring. The two-day tournament will be played at 7,125 yards on the par-72 course. Teams will play 36 holes on Friday, followed by the final 18 on Saturday.
The 25th-ranked Bears will be competing in a 17-team field featuring 10 Texas schools, including No. 8 Houston, Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese State, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, UT Arlington, UT Pan American and UTSA. The field also includes, No. 14 Oklahoma, Air Force, Central Arkansas, Gonzaga, Northern Colorado and ULM.
The Bears lineup is led by junior Kyle Jones, who placed second in last week's Querencia Cabo Collegiate. Senior Jerry Ruiz will join him, along with juniors Filippo Zucchetti and Niclas Mansson and sophomore Andreas Gjesteby. Junior Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen will compete as an individual.
Friday's first round will be a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. CT. The Bears are paired with Houston, Oklahoma and Central Arkansas. Baylor will tee off on holes one through three with Ruiz and Jones in groups 1A and 1B, followed by Mansson and Gjesteby on 2A and 2B and Zucchetti on the third hole. Bjerch-Andresen will start the day on the 16th tee.
