LAREDO, Texas – The 31st-ranked Baylor men’s golf will trek south on Interstate 35 for the Border Olympics, which will be held March 16-17 at the Laredo Country Club.

The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Houston will consist of 36 holes Friday and the final 18 holes Saturday on the par-72, 7,125-yard course. Friday’s rounds will tee off with an 8 a.m. CDT shotgun start, while the event wraps up with an 8 a.m. start for the final round. Live scoring for each round will be available at www.golfstat.com.

Baylor has a history of success in Laredo, winning the Border Olympics seven times in the Big 12 era, including wins in 2005, 2006 and 2009 under ninth-year head coach Greg Priest. In 2011, Joakim Mikkelsen set 18-, 36- and 54-hole career lows with an 11-under 205, tying for third overall. Baylor shot 18-under 846 to finish third in last season’s Border Olympics.

Mikkelsen, the reigning Big 12 Golfer of the Month, leads a Baylor lineup that includes senior Lorenzo Scotto, junior Ryan O’Rear, redshirt freshman Niclas Mansson and freshman Kyle Jones. Scotto and Jones will be in the Baylor lineup for the sixth time in eight events this season, while Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen, Drew McGee and Jerry Ruiz will compete as individuals.

Mikkelsen, ranked 14th nationally by Golfstat, owns a team-best 70.90 stroke average in 21 rounds, while carding a -0.67 score vs. par. The Drammen, Norway, native has 17 rounds of par or better this season and is a combined 9-under-par in his last seven rounds. Mikkelsen and O’Rear are the only two golfers to compete in each of Baylor’s eight tournaments.

Last month in Palm Desert, Calif., Baylor faced its toughest tournament field of the season, finishing 10th out of 24 teams at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Mikkelsen tied for 2nd, finishing one stroke behind the individual winner.

Following the Border Olympics, Baylor will continue its spring season March 31-April 1 at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
