WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team is headed to San Antonio, Texas, for the Lone Star Invitational hosted by UTSA. The 54-hole event runs Monday and Tuesday at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday. The tournament will be played at 7,258 yards on the par-72 course.
"We're looking forward to playing at Briggs Ranch," head coach Greg Priest said. "It's a really good golf course and another opportunity to get better and to prepare for the Big 12 Championship."
The 25th-ranked Bears will be competing in a 15-team field featuring UTSA, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Louisiana Tech, No. 20 New Mexico, North Texas, Notre Dame, No. 38 Purdue, Rice, Sacramento State, South Dakota State, Southeastern, Texas State and UT Arlington.
The Bears lineup is led by senior Jerry Ruiz, who placed second in last week's Border Olympics. He's followed by juniors Kyle Jones, Filippo Zucchetti and Niclas Mansson and sophomore Andreas Gjesteby. Patrick Bailey will make his spring debut competing as an individual.
"We've had a good semester up to this point," Priest said. "We would like to see if we can put 54 holes together this week."
Monday's first round will be a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Bears are paired with Purdue, New Mexico and UTSA. Baylor will tee off on holes one through four with Ruiz and Jones in groups 1A and 1B, followed by Mansson, Gjesteby and Zucchetti on holes two, three and four, respectively. Bailey will start the day on the 18th tee.
