LAREDO, Texas – Joakim Mikkelsen looks to defend his Border Olympics individual title when the Baylor men’s golf team participates in the event March 25-26 at Laredo Country Club. Mikkelsen won by two strokes, finishing at 3-under 213 in 2010.
Baylor returns to stroke play after participating in the three-day Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship in Ball Ground, Ga. The Bears finished 16th after going 0-4 with losses to Illinois, Pacific, South Carolina and Texas.
Baylor won the 2009 edition of the Border Olympics by seven strokes, while both Bill Allcorn and Cody Paladino finished in the top 10 individually. The Bears have won the Border Olympics seven times in the Big 12 era, including 2005, 2006 and 2009 under eighth-year head coach Greg Priest.
The 54-hole tournament will be held at the 7,125-yard, par-72 Laredo Country Club. The first 36 holes will be played Friday, followed by the final 18 holes Saturday. Eight of the 19 tournament teams hail from the Lone Star State – Baylor, Houston, Lamar, No. 37 North Texas, Rice, Texas State, UT Arlington and UTSA.
Mikkelsen, Lorenzo Scotto, Cody Paladino and Payne Gniewek anchor the upperclassmen-heavy lineup. Also participating will be sophomores Ryan O’Rear and Jerry Ruiz. Mikkelsen has played in six of Baylor’s seven tournaments, posting a team-best 73.17 scoring average, six rounds of par or better and five top-25 finishes. Scotto, who owns a 74.70 scoring average, is the only golfer to play in each of Baylor’s first seven tournaments.
Following the Border Olympics, Baylor will head west April 4-5 for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
