Men's Golf Heads to Big 12 Championship

Senior Ryan O'Rear is the lone upperclassman in Baylor's lineup.

April 21, 2013

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Baylor men's golf team is headed to the Big 12 Championship, which begins Monday and runs through Wednesday. The 72-hole tournament is hosted by Kansas State at the par-70, 6,759 yard course at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

The Bears are aiming for their first conference title in 12 years after posting seven top-five finishes in 11 regular season tournaments. Baylor's last Big 12 title came in 2001 when the tournament was also held in Hutchinson, Kan.

"We've shown that we can play with anybody," head coach Greg Priest said, "It's just being a little more consistent and trying to eliminate those big numbers and really eliminating that bad round. If we can do that, I think we've got a chance to play with anyone."

Baylor enters the 72-hole tournament as the No. 6 seed and will tee off on the first hole at 9 a.m. CT Monday. The Bears will play the first two rounds in groups with players from No. 4 seed Oklahoma and No. 5 seed Texas Tech. Teams are scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We have the same guys who have been travelling the last couple of weeks," Priest said. "They have played together a few tournaments so hopefully they are ready."

Four sophomores anchor Baylor's Line-up, including Kyle Jones, Filippo Zucchetti, Niclas Mansson and Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen. O'Rear, the lone senior in the lineup, is the only Baylor player with experience at Prairie Dunes.

"This is a course that is very demanding off the tee," senior Ryan O'Rear said. "But I think it helps us. A lot of our guys hit it pretty straight. We don't necessarily have the longest team, but we've got guys who are pretty accurate."

Jones and Bjerch-Andresen finished 17th and 18th, respectively, as freshmen in last year's Big 12 Championship, while O'Rear tied for 31st place and the Baylor team finished in fifth, just four strokes back of the top three. Zucchetti and Mansson will be making their debuts at the Big 12 Championship this season.
