WACO, Texas – The No. 11-ranked Baylor men's golf team has been awarded the No. 2 seed at the Bryan (Texas) Regional of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The bracket was revealed Wednesday during the NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Show on Golf Channel.
Baylor earned its 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, extending one of the nation's longest active streaks. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by Texas A&M and is scheduled for May 14-16 at Traditions Club, which is one of six regional sites. Additional regionals are in Columbus, Ohio (Scarlet Course/OSU CC), Kissimmee, Fla. (Reunion Resort), Norman, Okla. (Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club), Raleigh, N.C. (Lonnie Poole GC) and Stockton, Calif. (The Reserve at Spanish Park).
Host Texas A&M is the No. 1 seed at the regional. The Bears are the No. 2 seed, followed by No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Kentucky, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 South Carolina, No. 8 San Francisco, No. 9 Georgia, No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 11 UNC Wilmington, No. 12 Northern Colorado and No. 13 Bradley.
The top five teams and low individual on a non-advancing team will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, which will be played May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
BU has competed against four of its 12 Bryan Regional opponents during the 2017-18 season, and the Bears have a combined 5-4 head-to-head record against those teams – Texas A&M (0-4), Ole Miss (2-0), South Carolina (2-0) and Mississippi State (1-0).
Head coach Mike McGraw has led Baylor to NCAA Regionals in each of his four seasons guiding the program. The Bears are looking to set a program record with a third consecutive NCAA Championship berth. Baylor’s only back-to-back NCAA Championship berths were in 1966-67 and 2016-17. The Bears have played in seven NCAA Championships (1960, 1966, 1967, 2002, 2010, 2016, 2017).
BU won the first regional title in program history last season when it made a late push to tie host Stanford on its home golf course at the Stanford Regional. The Bears then finished tied for seventh in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship, earning the first match play berth in program history. BU lost in a playoff in its quarterfinal match against eventual national champion Oklahoma.
