Big 12 Men's Golf Postseason Honors

IRVING, Texas – Baylor senior and Big 12 champion Joakim Mikkelsen was one of 10 golfers named to the 2012 All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team, the conference office announced Thursday. Last month, Mikkelsen won the 2012 Big 12 Championship individual title by two strokes, erasing a seven-stroke deficit during the final round.

The 2012 All-Big 12 Team was identified by using the top-10 highest-ranked student-athletes according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship. The Player and Newcomer of the Year awards are automatically selected as the highest-ranked individuals from the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Conference championship.

Mikkelsen, the Big 12 Men’s Golfer of the Month for February and April 2012, has three career tournament wins, including a pair of victories this season at the Big 12 Championship and the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in February. Mikkelsen is enjoying one of the greatest individual seasons in program history, leading the Bears with a 71.46 scoring average and -0.30 score vs. par, while posting eight top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments. With his win at Whispering Pines in Trinity, Mikkelsen became the first Baylor golfer to earn Big 12 All-Tournament recognition since Bill Allcorn in 2009.

The Drammen, Norway, native was one of five finalists for the 2012 Byron Nelson Award. He is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in each of his first seven semesters at Baylor. A two-time GCAA PING All-Central Region selection in 2009-10 and 2010-11, Mikkelsen ranks third in program history with 12 career top-five and 19 top-10 finishes.

Mikkelsen is the 13th All-Big 12 golfer in program history and Baylor’s first All-Big 12 selection since Colton Williams in 2008.

Baylor, ranked 30th nationally in the latest Golfstat standings, has made 14 consecutive NCAA postseason appearances. The 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship Selection Show will be held Mon., May 8, at 8 p.m. CDT on NCAA.org.
