The Baylor men's golf team is headed to the NCAA West Regional, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. The 54-hole tournament is hosted by Oregon at the par-70, 6,990-yard course.
"It's a great opportunity for us," head coach Greg Priest said. "We are going to need all five guys playing at a high level. If we can stay focused on the process and control what we can control, I like our chances."
The Bears are making their 17th consecutive NCAA regional appearance, extending one of the nation's longest active streaks. Baylor enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed based on the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team rankings, where the Bears rank 27th nationally.
Eight teams in the 13-team regional are ranked in the top 50 teams according to the latest GolfStat rankings. The Bears are joined by No. 3 Stanford, No. 10 Houston, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 22 South Carolina, No. 34 Liberty, No. 40 Oregon and No. 47 Tennessee.
Other teams competing in the West Regional are North Florida, East Tennessee State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Wichita State and Northern Colorado.
The top five teams and low three individuals on non-advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, which will be played May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Junior Kyle Jones, who finished in the top-15 individuals in nine of this season's 12 tournaments, leads the Bears lineup. Jones is joined senior Jerry Ruiz, juniors Filippo Zucchetti and Niclas Mansson and sophomore Andreas Gjesteby.
The Bears are paired with No. 4 seed South Carolina and No. 6 seed Liberty. Friday's first round tee times begin at 10:20 a.m. CT. Zucchetti is first up for the Bears, teeing off from No. 10 at 10:20 a.m. Mansson, Gjesteby, Ruiz and Jones follow in 11-minute intervals, respectively.
