After shooting a first round 292, Baylor stands in a fourth place tie at the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships Central Regional Thursday at the Karsten Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. The Bears trail leader Kent State (289) by three strokes.
Baylor was led in the first round by senior Jimmy Walker, who is tied for fifth individually after shooting a three-under 69. Freshman Adam Meyer shot an even-par 72 Thursday and is tied at 15th.
Rounding out the individual scoring for the Bears were freshman Jon Antunes, who shot a two-over 74 and is tied at 37th, senior Brandon Sanders, tied at 88th after carding a first-round 77, and senior Worth Williams, who shot an 82 and is tied at 127.
Trailing Kent State in a second place tie are Texas A&M and the College of Charleston, which shot 291 in the first round. Joining Baylor in fourth are Minnesota, Ohio State and Oklahoma. The top 10 schools from the Central Regional will advance to the championship finals to be held May 30 through June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.
The Central Regional will be held May 17-19 at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater. Karsten Creek is a 7,027-yard par 72 course that opened in 1994. The Bears earned an automatic qualifying bid to the championships as a conference champion, and join 26 other schools participating at the regional. The top 10 teams will advance.
Baylor, earned an automatic qualifying bid to the championships after winning the Big 12 title, is competing in its fourth straight NCAA championships. The Bears made previous trips to the NCAA regionals under head coach Tim Hobby in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
The 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships Central Regional continues Friday morning with Round Two at the 7,027-yard, par 72 Karsten Golf Club.
