STILLWATER, Okla. - Baylor men's golf junior Joakim Mikkelsen was named to the PING All-Central Region Team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday.
Mikkelsen is the first Baylor Bear to earn all-region honors in consecutive seasons; as a sophomore in 2010, he was named to the All-Central Region squad. Ryan Baca (2006) is the only other golfer in program history to garner all-region accolades. A total of 152 players across six regions - Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West - earned all-region honors for 2011. Mikkelsen was among 26 golfers named All-Central Region, including 18 from the Big 12.
The Drammen, Norway, native led Baylor in every major statistical category, including rounds counted (97.1 percent), scoring average (72.35), score vs. par (1.03) and rounds of par or better (15). He posted nine top-25 finishes in 11 tournaments, while adding three top-10 and five top-15 finishes as well. His 72.35 scoring average is the seventh-lowest single-season mark in program history. In three seasons, Mikkelsen owns a 73.00 scoring average in 38 career tournaments (115 rounds) and has posted six top-five, 11 top-10, 18 top-15 and 26 top-25 finishes.
A four-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll member, he has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team in each of the last two seasons. Mikkelsen and the Bears advanced to the 2011 NCAA Florida Regional, marking Baylor's 14th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance and 16th overall.
