VICTORIA, Texas - Baylor's Men's golf team finished two strokes out of the ninth and final qualifying spot to advance to the national finals, after shooting a 282 Saturday in the final round of the 2000 NCAA Central Regional in Victoria, Texas.
The Bears finished 10th at the regional with a three-round 862, two strokes behind fellow Big-12 foes Kansas and Oklahoma, which tied for eighth place at 860. The top nine teams from the 27-team Central Regional advance to the NCAA Championship Finals to be held May 31 through June 3 at the Grand National Golf Course in Opelika, Ala.
Further heartbreak included top Baylor individual finisher Jimmy Walker missing out on the final individual qualifying spot after a three-way playoff against Jon Bartlett of Mississippi and Matt Lindholm of Texas A&M. Bartlett won the playoff, matching the trio who finished the tournament tied at 10th at two-under.
Baylor shot a two-under-par 282 in the final round at the 6,850-yard, par-71 Victoria Country Club.
Walker again paced the Bears Saturday, shooting a one-under-par 70 to finish 10th (72-69-70=211). Junior Brandon Sanders finished tied for 21st after carding a par, 71, in the final round (75-68-71=214). Senior Aaron Pellegrom also shot par Saturday, and finished the tournament in a tie for 32nd (78-67-71=216).
Rounding out the scoring for the Bears were freshman Garrett Froggatte, who shot one-under in the final round to finish tied at 106th (79-77-70=226), and junior Worth Williams, tied at 122nd (74-78-76=228).
Texas captured the team title after shooting a final-round 272 Saturday, and finished two strokes up (847) on Kent (849). Rounding out the qualifying teams were Oklahoma State (850), Houston (851), Minnesota (852), Northwestern (854), TCU (859), Kansas (860) and Oklahoma (860).
This marked the third straight NCAA regional appearance for head coach Tim Hobby's Baylor squad.
