WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team heads to Olympia Fields, Ill., for the eighth-annual Fighting Illini Invitational. This 54-hole event, which runs Friday through Sunday, will be held at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
Illinois is hosting the tournament, which will be played at the par-70, 7,142 yard course that held the 2003 U.S. Open. Baylor will be competing in a field of 15 teams including Alabama, Arkansas, Augusta State, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, SMU, Stanford, Texas and Texas Tech.
"This is probably going to be one of the strongest fields we play all year," head coach Greg Priest said. "There will be a lot of good teams, and it will be a good evaluator of where we are. It's one of those deals where our only competition is the golf course. It's a great field and a great golf course."
Baylor's lineup features four of the five players who helped the Bears to a second-place finish in the season-opening Gopher Invitational. Senior Jerry Ruiz, juniors Kyle Jones and Filippo Zucchetti and sophomore Andreas Gjesteby return to the lineup, while junior Niclas Mansson has been added.
Ruiz, Jones and Gjesteby all finished in the top 15 individually in Baylor's first tournament of the season. Ruiz tied for fourth place, while Jones finished tied for 10th and Gjesteby finished in 15th place.
"Hopefully we will carry the momentum from last week when we played well, so we will try to do the same thing we did last time," Priest said. "We will try to control what we can control and focus on process over outcome. If we can do that we are going to do pretty well."
Tee times for Friday's first round begin at 9 a.m. CT off the 10th hole starting with Mansson. He will be followed in eight-minute intervals by Gjesteby, Zucchetti, Ruiz and Jones, respectively.
