WACO, Texas - Following its third consecutive top-two finish to open the 2011-12 season, the Baylor men's golf team is ranked No. 14 in the nation by Golfstat.com and No. 16 by Golfweek. In the most recent Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll, Baylor was the third-highest among the other teams receiving votes.
Baylor opened the season with an 11-stroke victory at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y. The Bears followed with back-to-back second-place finishes at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and the Rod Myers Invitational.
Baylor's solid start can be attributed to the play of seniors Joakim Mikkelsen, Lorenzo Scotto and junior Ryan O'Rear. Mikkelsen leads the team with seven rounds of par or better, while posting three top-10 finishes. The Drammen, Norway, native ranks second on the team with a 71.44 scoring average, while O'Rear ranks third with a 71.67 average. O'Rear's two top-10 finishes are second only to Mikkelsen.
The trio has combined for six of Baylor's eight top-10 individual finishes and nine of Baylor's 13 top-25 individual finishes.
Baylor continues its fall season with a pair of tournaments in Texas, beginning Oct. 16-18 with the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio. The Bears will then conclude their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 1 with the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas.
