BOCA RATON, Fla. - Baylor's men's tennis' Denes Lukacs advanced to the final round of qualifying of the USTA Futures professional tournament at the Swim & Racquet Center of Boca Raton (FL) on Sunday. Lukacs was the only one of four Bears to survive the round of 32.
Lukacs, a junior, swept past Gary Sacks (RSA), 6-4, 7-5, en route to gaining a spot in the bracket finals. A win on Monday over William Noblitt (USA) will advance Lukacs to the main draw of the $10,000 satellite tournament.
Baylor's three other round of 32 participants put up valiant battles before bowing out of the tournament. Julian Bley, a freshman, won the first set against Blas Moros (USA) 6-3, but lost the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). Moros went on to claim the third set 6-2 to advance. Dominik Mueller, also a junior, faced 13th-seeded Milos Raonic (CAN) and all three sets were close ones. Mueller won the first set 7-6 (4) while Raonic claimed the second 7-6 (5). The Canadian eked out a 7-5 third-set victory to claim the set. After losing in the first set to 12th-seeded Mattia Livraghi (ITA), 6-3, junior Attila Bucko rebounded to take the second stanza 7-5.
