THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – 11th-ranked Baylor men's tennis junior Johannes Schretter advanced to the consolation singles semifinals on day two of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup Saturday at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
After dropping his opening match at the tournament, Schretter has won two straight matches to advance to the consolation semifinals. On Saturday, he defeated UCLA’s Connor Hance in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(9).
Meanwhile in the main draw, Jimmy Bendeck was stopped in the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 loss to Stanford’s Eric Fomba. Third-seeded Bjoern Petersen also ended his run in the third round with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to UCLA’s sixth-seeded Keegan Smith.
In doubles, the Bears went 3-1 in the opening round. Matias Soto and Will Little took down Stanford’s Tom Fawcett and Timothy Sah, 6-4, before falling in the quarterfinals to USC’s Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven, 6-1.
Bjoern Petersen and Akos Kotorman combined for a 7-5 victory over USC’s Henry Ji and Jens Sweaney in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the duo fell to UCLA’s second-seeded Austin Rapp and Keegan Smith, 6-1.
Jimmy Bendeck and Constantin Frantzen teamed up for the 7-6(4) win over UCLA’s Bryce Pereira and Maxime Cressy. The tandem fell in the quarterfinals to Stanford’s Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar, 7-5.
The fourth-seeded tandem of Johannes Schretter and Roy Smith slipped in the opening round to UCLA’s Connor Hance and Connor Rapp, 6-2, but then bounced back in the consolation quarterfinals with a 6-1 triumph over UCLA’s Lucas Bellemy and Reid Ponder.
While the tournament allows additional singles matches for players eliminated from the main or consolation draws, Roy Smith and Matias Soto captured victories while Constantin Frantzen suffered a loss Saturday afternoon.
In the consolation semifinals, top-seeded Johannes Schretter faces Stanford’s David Wilczynski starting at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday. Should he advance, he would face the winner of Stanford’s Timothy Sah and UCLA’s Maxime Cressy in the consolation singles final.
Schretter combines with Roy Smith for the consolation doubles semifinal against UCLA’s Maxime Cressy and Bryce Pereira at noon CT.
