THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Baylor's men's tennis gained its first experience of the spring season in opening round action the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Friday. Senior Denes Lukacs and doubles partners Attila Bucko and Jordan Rux were perfect on the day and have advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round at the Sherwood Country Club.
"It is a really tough tournament with one of the strongest draws in the country," assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "It was a great day of tennis at the beautiful Sherwood Country Club. It was great for our guys to get this experience."
Lukacs started his day off with a defeat of Walker Kehrer of Stanford 6-1, 6-2. The senior followed that win with a victory over Max Tabatruong of UCLA 6-1, 7-6(3). Three other Bears also advanced to second round action including seventh-seeded and 11th-ranked Rux, Maros Horny and Sergio Ramirez, before falling in the round of 32. Rux took care of Sam Guold of UC-Irvine 6-2, 7-6(3) in the first round before falling to Matt Brooklyn of UCLA 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3). Horny beat Zac Tsai of UC-Irvine 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, but then lost 6-4, 6-2 to Jaak Poldma of USC. Sergio Ramirez opened with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win over Kallim Stewart of UCLA and then got beat by Alex Clayton of Stanford 6-2, 7-5. The other three Bears in singles action all lost in the first round. Lukacs will now play at 10 a.m. on Saturday against Poldma of USC in quarterfinal action.

Doubles competition also began on Friday with round of 16 play for Baylor's trio of doubles tandems. Fourth-seeded Bucko and Rux were the only ones to win, taking down Walker Kehrer and Ted Kelly of Stanford 8-4. Mueller and Ramirez, playing a match together for the first time ever in competition fell to Alex Clayton and Richard Wire of Stanford, 8-2. Baylor's final pairing of Horny and Lukacs lost a highly contested match to Matt Kecki and Jaak Poldma of USC 9-8(3). Bucko and Rux will play tomorrow in the quarterfinals versus Daniel Nguyen and Jason McNaughton of USC.
