THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Baylor men's tennis sophomore and No. 2 overall seed Julian Lenz secured two wins in the first day of competition at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup hosted at the Sherwood Country Club.
Lenz was the only Baylor player to advance from the round of 32 with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Robbie Bellamy of USC. In the round of 16, Lenz defeated UCLA's No. 62 Dennis Mkrtchian by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Baylor's four other singles players, Mate Zsiga, No. 92 Tony Lupieri, Vince Schneider and Robert Verzaal all dropped their opening match at the event.
However, all four players responded with wins in their first round of consolation action.

Through two rounds of action, Lenz has not dropped a set and is a perfect 2-0 in matches in 2014.
Lenz will continue his run at the Sherwood Cup on Saturday in a quarterfinal match against UCLA's 62nd-ranked Mackenzie McDonald. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m. Doubles competition will begin on Saturday morning with all matches set to begin at 12:15 p.m. Baylor will have two teams competing in the doubles draw beginning with Schneider and Verzaal, who will face USC's pairing of Max deVroome and Eric Johnson, while third-seed Zsiga and Lenz are set to face Nick Crystal and Michael Grant also of USC.
