CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Despite winning the doubles point, Baylor’s men’s tennis team couldn’t sustain the momentum through singles and dropped a 4-2 decision to Stanford in first-round action of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The win, Stanford’s first over Baylor in 12 tries, raised the ninth-ranked Cardinal’s record to 8-3 while seventh-ranked Baylor drops to 4-2.
The doubles point came down to the last match on and was decided in a tiebreaker. Marko Krickovic and Robert Verzaal produced BU’s first doubles win when they were first off the court with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 but Stanford countered with an 8-6 victory on the top court over Roberto Maytin and Mate Zsiga. With the doubles point still to be decided, Kike Grangeiro and Julian Bly pulled out a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles to claim the point for the Bears.
Stanford evened the match at 1-1 when senior All-American Bradley Klahn defeated Krickovic at No. 3. Freshman Diego Galeano gained BU’s second point with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. Grangeiro, playing at No. 6, and Lars Behlen, on court five, each dropped three-set matches, putting Stanford up 3-2. With the top two courts still on and tightly contested, Stanford’s 29th-ranked Ryan Thacher, a senior, downed 25th-ranked Zsiga, a freshman, at No. 1, 7-5, 7-5, to clinch the match for the Cardinal. At No. 2 singles, Maytin and Matt Kandath were playing a third-set tiebreaker when play was suspended.
Baylor will now face 15th-ranked Auburn, a 4-0 loser to second-ranked Virginia. The teams play on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
