Men's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis squad posted two victories on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center and raised its home record to 9-1 on the season. The Bears blanked Prairie View A&M and downed Abilene Christian, 7-0 and 6-1, respectively.

With the wins, the 35th-ranked Bears raised their season record to 12-7 while Prairie View A&M falls to 4-12 and Abilene Christian is now 13-7.

"It was a great day for us, a lot of guys got to play, nothing but positives for us today. It was a beautiful day to be out here and gives us a good feeling going into conference play which we know the level of competition will be great," said head coach Matt Knoll.

In early afternoon action, Baylor gave up just nine games in singles and five in doubles to Prairie View A&M. The Bears blanked the Panthers in six sets, including a double bagel by Diego Galeano over Juan Pablo Robles, 6-0, 6-0. Four other Bears, Robert Verzaal, Julian Bley, Kike Grangeiro and Robbie Korth, all won their matches 6-1, 6-0. Playing at No. 1, Marko Krickovic won his match 6-3, 6-2. Baylor was equally as dominant in doubles, winning 8-1 on both courts 1 and 3 and scoring an 8-3 victory on court 2.

The evening match vs. Abilene Christian proved to be more competitive for the Bears. Baylor won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and triumphed in two of the three doubles competitions. No. 33 Mate Zsiga posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over ACU's Hans Hach, No. 82 Roberto Maytin downed Borja Cortes, 6-2, 6-0, Krickovic defeated Nick Plum 6-2, 6-2, Verzaal defeated Guilherme Gesser, 6-1, 6-4 and Julian Bley posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michael Morris. ACU's lone win came at court 5 where Alfredo Desiati defeated Lars Behlen, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9). The match was Behlen's first competition in over a month as he's been sidelined by injury. In double, Bley and Krickovic, playing at No. 2, downed Cortes and Gesser, 8-1, Galeano and Korth defeated Desiati and Kyle Plum, 8-3, at No. 3 and ACU's Hach and Nick Plum downed Maytin and Grangeiro at the top court, 8-5.



The Bears open Big 12 Conference play at its Hurd Tennis Center on Saturday, March 31 at 6 p.m. when they host 29th-ranked Texas Tech.
