Men's Tennis in NCAA Semifinals for Fourth Straight Year

May 19, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. - With its 4-0 shutout of North Carolina State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, Baylor men's tennis advanced the tournament semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

The victory raises Baylor's season record to 28-3 and extended its win streak to 10 matches while North Carolina State ends it season with a 23-10 record. After a day off, the Bears will play Illinois, an upset winner over second-seeded Ohio State (4-2) on Monday, May 21 at 8 a.m. (CDT) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. Baylor played Illinois in the National Team Indoor Championships earlier this season. The Bears downed Illinois 4-0.

Baylor improves to 29-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and is now 4-2 in quarterfinal matches.

It took the Bears just 42 minutes to claim the doubles point when the tandems of Lars Poerschke/Michal Kokta and Matija Zgaga/Denes Lukacs posted victories over their Wolfpack opponents at courts one and two, respectively. For the second straight match Poerschke and Kokta, ranked No. 60, upset a tandem ranked much higher than them by posting their seventh straight victory with an 8-3 upset over 13th-ranked Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt. On Thursday, they had upset Alabama's 23rd-ranked duo of Dan Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau. Zgaga and Lukacs, who had not played together prior to NCAA Tournament play, continued their unbeaten ways (4-0) with an 8-4 win on court two. When play was suspended, Baylor's David Galic and Matt Brown were tied 6-6 on court three.

With his doubles victory today, Zgaga now has 100 career doubles wins making him just one of two players in Baylor tennis history to reach the century mark in both singles and doubles. His 102 singles wins and 100 doubles victories rank him behind former standout Benjamin Becker's 141 singles and 104 doubles wins.

Two freshmen and a senior secured the victory for the Bears with singles wins. Dominik Mueller, playing on court five, walked off the court first with a swift 6-2, 6-1 win over Christian Welte. Lukacs gained Baylor its third point 11 minutes later with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Andre Iriarte on court six. Kokta ended North Carolina State's season with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court two over Noblitt. Poerschke and Brown had each won their first sets; Poerschke was tied at 3-3 in the second while Brown trailed in his 2-5. Zgaga lost his first set in a tiebreaker and had a 4-3 lead when play was halted.

"A win is a win. To get off quick is just a plus, I feel fortunate and ready for a great match on Monday. Clearly, Ohio State is better than us (beat BU 4-0 this season). If we play them, we will be the underdog. Whoever we end up playing, it will be good competition," said head coach Matt Knoll.
