ATHENS, Ga. -- Three Baylor men’s tennis players all lost in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
To open the day, 15th-ranked Juan Benitez suffered a 7-6(4), 6-4 defeat against No. 69 Jack Findel-Hawkins of North Florida. The loss concludes the BU sophomore’s season at 22-10 and 10-10 against nationally ranked opponents.
Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Johannes Schretter dropped a three-set decision to Arkansas’ 10th-ranked Mike Redlicki, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The defeat closes Schretter’s season with a 21-4 record and a 7-3 mark against ranked foes.
In the afternoon, senior Max Tchoutakian faced several weather delays, which extended his match, but ended up faltering 6-4, 7-6(6) against No. 58 Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech. The 50th-ranked Bear was tied 6-6 in the second-set tiebreaker when inclement weather forced the match to be delayed for several minutes. When play resumed Tchoutakian lost the next two points to conclude his BU career. He finished 28-10 in his final campaign. That win total was the most of any player on the squad and raised his career singles record to 65-32.
On Thursday, Juan Benitez and doubles partner Will Little will begin play in the NCAA Doubles Championship. The BU duo will face Rice’s 61st-ranked Tommy Bennett and David Warren in first round action at 1 p.m. CT. As the 22nd-ranked duo in the country, Benitez and Little are 6-4 on the year.
