BALTIMORE -
A day after Baylor's number four through six
players lost in the qualifying round of the T. Rowe
Price National Clay Court Championships, the
Bears' top three players all lost in the main draw
on Thursday.
Johann Jooste defeated Tom Hand of LSU in the first
round of the main draw by a score of 6-4, 6-2. In
the second round, Jooste lost to Duke's Ramsey
Smith, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Baylor's number two and three players both lost in
the first round of the main draw. Pawel Gajdzik
fell to Martin Selin of Ole Miss by a score of 7-5,
6-3, while Daniel Andersson of VCU beat Baylor's
David Hodge, 6-4, 7-6(3).
In consolation, Gajdzik lost to Andres Pedroso of
Duke, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Hodge fell to Auburn's Tiago
Ruffoni, 7-6(2), 6-2.
Baylor's three doubles teams, however, fared
better, as two of the three won to advance to the
next round.
The team of Hodge and Mark Williams defeated
Tennessee1s Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo by a score
of 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Gajdzik and Johannes Michalsky teamed up to beat
James Shortall and Kristopher Stahlberg of Ole
Miss, 6-4, 7-5.
Baylor's team of Csongor Bibza and Jooste, however,
lost to UNLV's Vladimir Pavicevic and Nenad
Zivkovic.
In other doubles matches, Hodge and Mark Williams
came back to beat Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo of
Tennessee, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Gajdzik and Michalsky
topped James Shortall and Kristopher Stahlberg of
Mississippi, 6-4, 7-5.
