MIDLAND, Texas - The men's tennis team opened the 2009 fall season by sending three players to the 10th Annual Midland Collegiate Invitational held Friday through Sunday in Midland.
Sophomores Maros Horny and Julian Bley both reached the quarterfinals round of the 32-player singles tournament before bowing out to the eventual tournament finalists.
Horny opened the event with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Bryan Griffin of SMU and a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Boise State's Filipp Pogostkin. Horny's run came to an end with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to the No. 1 seed in the tournament and eventual champion Bruno Rosa of Rice. Rosa is ranked No. 22 in the ITA's preseason rankings.
Bley, who was the tournament's fifth seed and is the 113th-ranked player in the preseason rankings, started with a 7-5, 6-2 win over John Strahl of Abilene Christian and a 6-3, 6-3 victory over George Chanturia of Oklahoma. Bley would be taken down in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-2 by eventual tournament finalist Josh Zavala of Texas.
Baylor's other representative at the tournament, senior Attila Bucko, was the No. 4 seed at the event, but fell to John Lewis of Texas A&M in the opening round in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Bucko, the pre-season's 85th- ranked player in the country, rebounded to take his first round consolation match against Mindaugas Celedinas of UT-Arlington 6-2, 6-3. However, Bucko would fall in his next match to New Mexico's Jadon Phillips 6-2, 6-2.
Baylor's lone doubles duo at the Invitational, Bley and Horny, lost in the opening round of 32 to Sam Garforth-Bles and Dennis Polyakov of Rice, 8-4.
The Bears will now host the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Tournament next weekend at the Baylor Tennis Center, Sept. 25-27.
